Sunrise mountain photography can be quite a crap shoot. Driving and then hiking to the right spot in the dark and being ready to quickly change your preconceived ideas for the subject and composition based on the conditions require dedication and flexibility. On this cold October morning I woke at our campsite in Mazama valley and drove up to Washington Pass, and then hiked to the overlook in about 20-degree weather. The incredible mountain photography I was about to get made it all worth it. 
 
Everything was perfectly still and quiet as the light started filling the sky. And to my wonder and astonishment, the sky was filled with ice crystal clouds that caught the early sun’s warm glow like cotton candy. The snowy contour of Kangaroo Ridge is strong and bold, and a perfect balance to the wild and otherworldly sky above it in this mesmerizing mountain photograph.
